A Culture of
Love & Expression
At Summerhill, culture is not an add-on - it is central to who we are. We celebrate creativity, self-expression, diversity and the arts as essential dimensions of a complete education.
Our Philosophy
Why a Diverse Cultural Education Matters
Research consistently shows that students who engage deeply with the arts, music and cultural programmes develop stronger critical thinking, emotional intelligence and resilience - qualities that serve them throughout their academic and professional lives.
Whole-Child Development
Academic achievement alone does not define a complete education. The arts develop empathy, emotional vocabulary, and self-awareness - dimensions of learning that no textbook can replicate.
Cultural Pride & Identity
Summerhill celebrates the rich diversity of South Africa. Our programmes honour African heritage, encourage cross-cultural understanding, and help every student see their identity as a strength.
Confidence & Communication
Whether on stage, on the chess board, or in front of a canvas, cultural participation builds the confidence and communication skills that employers and universities actively seek.

Visual Arts
Art as a Language
Our dedicated art rooms are vibrant, busy spaces where students explore painting, drawing, collage, printmaking and mixed media. From Foundation Phase to College, visual art is taught as a serious discipline - one that develops observation, patience, and creative problem-solving alongside technical skill.
Students regularly participate in the Eisteddfod and national art competitions, and their work is proudly displayed throughout our campus. At Summerhill, every child is an artist.
Music & Performance
The Rhythm of Summerhill
Music at Summerhill is joyful, inclusive and deeply rooted in African tradition. Our marimba ensemble and African drumming groups bring students together across grades, backgrounds and abilities - finding common ground in rhythm, melody and expression.
Beyond African instruments, students participate in choir, Eisteddfod musical categories, and individual instrumental tuition. Music education develops concentration, mathematical thinking, emotional literacy and teamwork - and it brings our school alive.
Marimba Ensemble
Our celebrated marimba group performs at school events, community functions and competitions.
African Drumming
Students learn the history, technique and cultural significance of African percussion instruments.
Choir
A vibrant choir open to all students, performing at assemblies, Eisteddfod and end-of-year concerts.
Eisteddfod
Annual participation in individual and group categories across singing, instrumental and speech.

Chess & Strategy
Our Iconic Giant Chess Board
One of the most beloved features of the Summerhill campus is our life-size outdoor chess board - a permanent fixture on our grounds that draws students of every age together. Chess is more than a game here; it is a thinking tool.
Moving oversized pieces across the board, students learn forward planning, consequence thinking and patience in a way that is physical, social and deeply engaging. The chess board has become a symbol of the kind of school we are - one that values strategy, concentration and joyful learning in equal measure.
Why Chess?
"Chess teaches children that every decision has a consequence, and that thinking two moves ahead is always worth the effort."

Drama & Performance
Taking the Stage
From school productions to Eisteddfod recitations, drama at Summerhill teaches students to inhabit another perspective, control their nerves, and communicate with power.
School Productions
Annual theatrical performances involving students from across the school - from script to spotlight.
Eisteddfod
Participation in poetry, prose, drama and speech categories at district and regional level.
Public Speaking
Debate, prepared speech and impromptu speaking competitions build confidence and communication skills.
Storytelling
We celebrate the African oral tradition through storytelling events and cultural performance evenings.
Diversity & Inclusion
Celebrating Every Culture in Our Community
Summerhill School is proudly multicultural. Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds, languages and traditions - and that diversity is not managed, it is celebrated. We believe that learning alongside people who are different from you is one of the most valuable educations a child can receive.
Our cultural calendar includes Heritage Day celebrations, cultural food events, language awareness programmes and collaborative projects that draw on the richness of our school community. We teach students to see cultural difference as an invitation to learn, not a barrier to overcome.
